Like color-cooling, polychromy, designated here as Chromax, is a common a visual trend in the larger scheme of our local design sensibilities, from architecture to publication. It is linked to the extended meanings of the word makulay (colorful): attractive, festive and lively.

Mostly new editions of old government and “suggested reading” textbooks, with covers that fit neatly in the portfolios of those working as printshop layout artists. Through instinctive composition and resourceful use of system fonts and primary colors, they shape a vernacular design language that is both adaptive and quietly radical.
