Like color-cooling, polychromy, designated here as Chromax, is as common a visual trend in the larger scheme of our local aesthetic sensibilities. It is linked to the extended meanings of the word makulay or colorful: attractive, festive and lively.

Mostly new editions of old government and “suggested reading” textbooks, with covers that fit neatly in the portfolios of those who identify as printshop layout artists. Unwitting purveyors of a new folk aesthetic, these artists know to harness a hidden potential in system fonts and primary colors, and to thrive despite limited training and resources.
